About Dallas Hearing Foundation - "Bringing SOUND to Life"

The Dallas Hearing Foundation (DHF) is a not-for-profit foundation exclusively dedicated to giving the gifts of  hearing and speech to hearing-impaired children and adults. The foundation's mission is to provide medical and surgical treatment, hearing technologies, speech and hearing rehabilitation, and educational support to those who are in financial need. Today's revolutionary technologies, such as digital hearing aids, cochlear implants, and auditory-verbal therapy, make a hearing-speaking life and quality education available to many deaf children and adults. Our specialized team consists of an otologic surgeon, audiologists, a speech-language pathologist, an educational consultant, and a psychologist. We serve people with hearing impairment of all colors, creeds, and nations of origin.

In our one of a kind program, we individualize each child and adult's treatment to provide the extraordinary attention needed to optimize each deaf person's potential to hear, speak, and receive a quality education. Our program is separate from, yet supportive of, public school programs for deaf children. Public schools are unable to offer the high degree of individual therapy, parent  education/training, and medical management our program provides. We understand this, and in our first few years of intensive management of these children, it is our goal to prepare them to attend regular schools with normally hearing children. We currently have children throughout Texas who are receiving a quality education with their hearing peers in mainstream schools after their initial years with us. Mainstreaming deaf children into regular classrooms saves the public school system up to $200,000 per child. In addition, rather than receiving disability throughout adulthood, deaf individuals who are educated and verbally competent can achieve gainful employment and independence.

A respected government study has shown that upon graduation from high school, deaf students from public deaf education programs enter adulthood minimally employable with a 3rd grade reading level and ineffective speaking or writing. In contrast numerous studies have demonstrated the superior outcomes of deaf students receiving modern hearing aids or cochlear implants combined with auditory-verbal therapy. However expense continues to be a barrier that prevents many children and adults from receiving this life changing treatment. With your help, we can offer these outcomes to a greater number of deaf children throughout the Dallas area.
